Age matters. Once a boiler gets past 12 to 15 years, efficiency usually drops and fault risk rises, even if it still fires up on cold mornings in Shoreham or Sevenoaks. A modern condensing boiler is typically 90%+ efficient, so the jump in performance can be obvious on the gas bill as well as on reliability.

Premium warranties are a useful clue when you are comparing models. Five years is still common on standard lines, while 7-10 years and 10-12 years are more typical on higher-end ranges from brands such as Vaillant, Worcester Bosch and Viessmann. That does not mean every long-warranty boiler is better for every TN14 property, but it does show how the manufacturer rates the kit.

Warning signs usually arrive in small bursts first. A pressure drop here, a reset there, then a repair bill that keeps coming back.
