Boilers do not fail politely. A unit that is 12-15 years old is often running less efficiently, and small faults can cascade during a cold snap. In London that matters because a lot of homes were built before 1945, and older pipework and radiators can hide sludge that makes a boiler work harder. You might notice longer heat-up times, kettling noises, or hot water that swings hot-cold in the shower.

A modern condensing boiler is designed to recover more heat from the flue gases, so it can run at 90%+ efficiency when the system is set up well. Flue routing is a London-specific talking point because of the age and density of the building stock.
