One of the most interesting and varied houses in Northumberland. Callaly is a hamlet located in the valley below Thrunton Woods in Northumberland, with access to woodland and moorland walks. The Museum Wing of Callaly Castle forms part of a historic country house near the village of Callaly, approximately 9 miles west of Alnwick. Callaly Castle is a Grade I listed building situated near the site of a 12th-century motte castle and an Iron Age hill fort. A Pele tower constructed in the 14th or 15th century and later incorporated into a larger house built by John Clavering in 1619. Significant additions were made in 1676 by architect Robert Trollope, with further alterations in 1707. The Castle remained the home of the Clavering family for many years and included a Roman Catholic chapel, which was deconsecrated after the family sold the property in 1877. Additional alterations took place during the 18th and 19th centuries, followed by major restoration work undertaken by Alexander Browne in the 1890s. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner described it as “one of the most interesting and varied houses in Northumberland.” In 1987, architect Kit Martin converted the former country house into a number of residential wings. Callaly Castle now comprises four principal wings together with cottages, houses and apartments. Residents and visitors also have access to a small museum. The castle stands within approximately 35 acres of shared parkland grounds, including formal lawns, a croquet lawn, woodland, mature trees, three lakes, a formal kitchen and herb garden, and allotment plots. The Hamlet of Callaly lies approximately 2 miles west of the rural village of Whittingham with a close community, busy village hall, Anglican and Catholic churches and a primary school. The nearby village of Powburn has a shop, sub-post office, filling station, and pub. and enjoys convenient access to the amenities of the historic market town of Alnwick, situated around 10 miles to the east. Newcastle upon Tyne is approximately 40 miles to the south, while Edinburgh is readily accessible via the A697 and A1, approximately 80 miles to the north. The nearby market town of Rothbury (8 miles) offers a wide range of amenities including healthcare, shops, restaurants, a golf course and schools, along with specialist outlets such as a delicatessen, antiques shop and galleries.
