About this property

This charming former chapel enjoys a rich and fascinating history at the heart of the village of Whaddon, Wiltshire.
Non-conformist worship in the village dates back to 1698, when early gatherings were held in the home of John Sanger. By 1807, Methodist meetings were formally registered at the house of Richard Penton, reflecting the growing religious community in the area.
The dedicated Primitive Methodist Chapel was subsequently built and opened in 1884, providing a permanent place of worship for the village. George Dowty served as steward at the time of its establishment, and the chapel became an important focal point for Methodist life in Whaddon for over a century.
In 1985, a covenant of partnership was signed with the nearby St. Mary's Church, demonstrating a spirit of cooperation between denominations within the village.
The chapel continued to serve the Methodist community until 1990, when it was sold and later repurposed as a Roman Catholic place of worship, known as the Chapel of the Holy Family.
Today, the building stands as a testament to over three centuries of Christian worship in Whaddon, blending historic character with continued spiritual heritage.
The Chapel currently comprises a principal hall measuring approximately 15 metres in length, leading through to an internal hallway. Off the hallway is a small kitchen area fitted with a sink and worktop, a storage room with skylight, a further storage room with skylight and fitted cupboards, a W.C., and an additional storage room. To the rear, there is an entrance lobby with a fire door providing access to the side courtyard area.
